Field Trips

Basics

You MUST sign up for field trips on meetup.com or notify the field trip leader to place you on the list.  You can use either a computer or cell phone to do this.

To go on a field trip you MUST be a member of the club or a first time guest of a member.

There is a limit of 15 people for each field trip.

If your plans change, notify the field trip leader so someone else can take your place.  Accordingly, if the field trip has any changes or is canceled, you will be notified.

Sorry to get all legal, but we need you to sign a Release of Liability form and bring it along on the field trip or leave it at the club house for our files.

For a copy of the form click here   GJGMC Release of liability_2024

Preparation

There is not a lot to bring to the museum except maybe a camera and a notepad.

The mountains and the desert are a different story.

For trips designated as Basic, here are some guidelines.

A regular car is OK as long as it is not really low.  A full tank of gas is always a good idea.

You can wear shorts and a T-shirt but bring along a long sleeve shirt, long pants, and a jacket.  We get big changes in temperature and sometimes high winds.

Food, WATER, at least one gallon per person, rock-hounding tools like a hammer, brushes to clean specimens, gloves, and storage containers for rocks such as cloth bags, buckets, or corrugated boxes or flats.

A first aid kit, clothing appropriate to conditions, maps, sunscreen and bug spray.  No sandals!!!  Wear hiking boots or very sturdy athletic shoes, hat, gloves, and sunglasses.

A GPS, notebook, camera, and a mineral ID book would be nice but not necessary.

No alcoholic beverages.

Regular or paper towels.  Trash bags – Be more than responsible.

Haul out more than you bring in.

Toilet paper – you never know.

For Basic +

4-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle with a full tank of gas.

Picks, shovels, large hammers, and pry bars and chisels.
